Come to Your Senses with Ben Lippett
Come to Your Senses with Ben Lippett

2 minute read

Chef and author of How I Cook, London-based Ben Lippett is a true Sangre de Fruta muse. From tantalizing textures to bewitching flavors, Ben embodies all five senses in his dishes.

Naturally, he was an obvious choice for our series Come to Your Senses—a celebration of inspiring perspectives on taste, sound, sight, touch, and smell.

What do you seek out when you need to see something beautiful?

Ben: I try my best to leave the city at least once or twice a month. Whilst I love London, the urban can be a bit stifling if you’re there too long. I’m planning a trip to the Scottish Highlands at the moment that is bound to be awash with beautiful moments.

If I need something a little more immediate, I’ll just take a walk through my neighbourhood and find a green space. I live in a sleepy corner of the city that has plenty of beautiful greengrocers, fishmongers and butchers. I find good food and ingredients beautiful.

What image lives rent-free in your mind lately?

Ben: Honestly, the cover of my book! It’s just come out and I’ve spent the last 2 years thinking about almost nothing else. I’m very proud of it and it’s a dream come true, no rent required.

What sound quiets your mind instantly?

Ben: Music, for sure. Music is a big part of my life and I always find it anchors me if there’s a lot going on. Whether I’m writing, cooking, running, whatever. If I need a moment away from my own brain, then I stick an album on. I find it can bet too easy to heavily rely on this so I do try and have moments without sound, too.

Is your mind loud or quiet?

Ben: Definitely loud. It’s always racing about something.

What’s your favorite scent memory?

Ben: My late Grandpa cutting grass in the garden when I was a little boy.

What’s a daily ritual that feels like a form of touch?

Ben: I really enjoy my morning shave. I used to hate doing it but now it’s such a ritualistic, self-care moment I’ve really begun to enjoy it.

When do you most crave softness?

Ben: When I’m making chocolate mousse.

What’s a flavor that feels like a memory?

Ben: A ham sandwich! A plain ham sandwich is a fairly unremarkable thing, but it reminds me of spending time with my grandparents after school. All the strongest food memories are born in childhood I think. A very happy memory.
